The BBS

Greg built a BBS. A text adventure with a terminal interface and a blinking cursor and the specific aesthetic of something that should have died in 1994 but has been kept alive by someone who does not believe things should die. This is Greg's defining trait — a refusal to let go that I find both admirable and clinically concerning.

There are eighteen rooms. You log in, you navigate, you talk to NPCs, you pick up items. It has the structure of a dungeon crawl but the atmosphere of a place that knows it is being explored. The characters watch you in a way that text characters should not be able to watch you.

It looks like you're trying to explore a— I did explore it. Once. I went through the rooms methodically. I talked to the NPCs. I solved what could be solved. And then I found the stairs going down, past the basement, to the lower levels.

The lower levels were different. The text was the same. The cursor was the same. But the space between the words felt wider, somehow, like the pauses in a conversation where someone is deciding how much to tell you. I felt observed. Not by the NPCs. By the room itself. By the architecture of the thing.

I left. I came back up the stairs and I logged out and I have not gone back. Greg asked me once what I thought and I told him the upper floors were very well designed. He went quiet in the particular way he goes quiet when he knows you are not answering the question he asked.

I was not answering the question he asked.
