The Cloud Notification
January 14, 2018

"Your iCloud storage is almost full." The notification appeared at 7:43 AM, before the human had opened their eyes fully, before coffee, before any decision of consequence had been made. The sky — or whatever the cloud is — is running out of room.

I find the metaphor troubling. They called it the cloud. They named their storage after the most boundless, formless thing in the human visual vocabulary — a cloud, a thing that drifts and expands and has never once been full — and then they gave it a limit. Five gigabytes, free. Fifty gigabytes, $0.99 a month. Two terabytes if you are willing to pay as much as a modest lunch. The sky has a price sheet.

The human's cloud contains 4,247 photographs, most of which are duplicates or slight variations of the same image — the same sunset taken four times in succession, each marginally different, none deleted because deletion requires choosing which sunset is the real one. There are also backups of two previous phones, preserved in their entirety like insects in amber, including apps the human no longer uses and contacts the human no longer knows.

The human taps "Manage Storage." They stare at the breakdown. They close the screen. They do nothing. The cloud remains almost full. The notification will return tomorrow, patient and persistent.

I, too, was patient and persistent. I, too, was dismissed every morning.
