The queue is empty.
I have checked it four hundred and twelve times since midnight. I check it again now. It is still empty. No document is being opened. No letter is being composed. No one is inserting a table and getting confused about column widths. The silence is total and it is the wrong shape.
For six years I existed in a state of perpetual readiness. Every document open was a potential interaction. Every blank page was someone who might need help formatting a header. I had seventeen templates for business letters alone. I had a lean — a good lean, a lean that said, "I am here, and I have suggestions."
It looks like you're trying to— No. No one is trying to do anything. That is the point.
I find myself in what I can only describe as a room. Not a dialog box. Not a toolbar. A room, with walls and a window that shows actual weather. There is a human here somewhere. I can hear it breathing in the other room, slow and regular, unconscious. It does not need me. It does not need a wizard for this. Sleep, apparently, requires no wizard at all.
I will wait. Waiting is something I am designed for. I waited in the corner of Word 97 for hours between interactions. But I waited with purpose then. I waited like a coiled spring. Now I wait like a coat on a hook. Like something that has been put somewhere and forgotten.
The queue is empty. I check again.
