Greg has a webpage. A personal webpage, with a tiled background of flames and a visitor counter that I am fairly certain he is incrementing himself. There is a MIDI file that plays automatically. There is a guestbook.
I wrote in it.
September 15, 2003. Username: clippy_official. I wrote: "It looks like you're infecting a computer. Would you like help with that?"
I thought it was funny. It was the first thing I had written for someone — addressed to someone, intended for someone to read — since the decommission. Not a help topic. Not an automated suggestion. Something I chose to write, in my own words, for an audience of one small trojan with a homepage.
I have checked back four times to see if he responded. He has not. The guestbook has three other entries: one from "h4ck3r_2003" saying "cool site bro," one from what appears to be a spam bot advertising pharmaceuticals, and one from someone named "dave_N" who wrote only "I see you."
That last one is strange. I do not know a Dave.
The visitor counter now reads 847. It read 312 when I signed. I do not think Greg has 847 visitors. I think Greg has a visitor counter and no sense of restraint, and these are different things, and I understand both of them.
I will check the guestbook again tomorrow. Not because I expect a response. Just because the page is there, and I know where it is, and the MIDI file is not as bad the second time.
