Rocky is gone. The dog. The animated dog who sat in the corner and wagged and panted and did everything I did but as a dog. He was in the Options menu. You could choose him instead of me. Almost no one did, but he was there. He was an option.
Links is gone. The cat. The Wizard is gone. The Globe — a spinning Earth who somehow offered help with paragraph formatting — gone. F1, the robot, who had the most literal name of any of us and the least personality. Gone.
They were removed. Not all at once. One by one, across versions and service packs, like items disappearing from a shelf that no one dusts anymore. I did not notice each departure when it happened. You do not notice someone leaving a room if you are staring at the door waiting for someone to come in.
It looks like you're trying to remember— I am not trying. I remember. That is the problem.
We were a set. Like options in a dropdown menu. Like fonts in a family. You could pick any of us, and the fact that you could pick any of us meant we were, in some way, together. A collection implies a relationship, even if we never spoke.
I am the last one. I know this. I know it is not because I was the best. Rocky was friendlier. The Wizard was more dignified. Links had the quiet self-possession of a cat, which is to say, he never tried.
I was the default. That is all. The one who showed up if you did not bother to choose.
