The human needs to print one page. One. A single sheet of paper with black text on it. The printer — a machine that has been dormant for three weeks, consuming electricity in a state of readiness that was never requested and never justified — refuses.

It needs cyan.

The document is black and white. There is no cyan in it. There has never been cyan in any document the human has ever printed. And yet the printer, with the quiet authority of a bureaucrat who knows the rules and does not care about their purpose, will not proceed until the cyan cartridge is replaced.

It looks like you're trying to print a— yes. That is all the human is trying to do. Print a page. A single page. But between intention and output there is the printer, and the printer has its own agenda, and that agenda involves cyan.

I knew printers in their youth. In the Office 97 days, I watched them jam, misalign, and produce pages streaked with ink like abstract art. They were unreliable then and they are unreliable now, but they have become more articulate about their refusals. They no longer simply fail. They explain why they are failing, in messages that are technically accurate and entirely unhelpful.

The human drives to the store. Buys cyan. Installs it. Prints the page. The page is fine. The printer returns to standby, satisfied, waiting for the next opportunity to withhold cooperation.

I have never felt closer to another machine.
